Typically the average size of urban solid wastes in the combustible composition of this invention is ≤60 mm and, preferably ≤25 mm. The average size of the elastomeric material is ≤10 mm, preferably ≤5 mm and, still more preferably ≤1 mm. The average size of the non-elastomeric polymeric material is ≤40 mm and, preferably ≤15 mm.

Rejects typically contain quartz, pyrite and/or marcasite, feldspar, clay, and carbonate minerals mixed with coal. Reject particles are typically 2–5 mm across, although their sizes vary greatly ( EPRI, 1999) and depend on the way that they were separated from the coal ( U.S. EPA, 1988 ).
In all of the units sampled for this study, coal is pulverized in a ball and race mill with the pulverized coal entrained in the air and swept out of the top of the pulverizer and into the boiler and the excessively hard material. The pulverizer rejects or "pyrites", are removed from the bottom of the pulverizer.
