I have a Supermax mill. Originally, it was a CNC with Anilam controller. A lot of them were. They are a solid built mill. I'd check if it has the CNC ball lead screws. Blanking on the correct term. It came with manual handles, but no dials. I use a DRO. If the ways are in good shape, $500 is a steal.

It would be pert near impossible to get a decent 13X40 lathe, mill and tool them up for $7-10k, and if you take shortcuts on the tools, you'll be fighting them to do good work. And whatever you do, don't get a combo lathe/mill, they it's a jack of all trades master of none that you'll spend more time converting back and forth vs. making chips.

Hi all, I've been looking to upgrade my mill. I currently have a Precision Matthews 940M. A neighbor, who's husband passed a few years ago, has a 1996 Supermax YCM-40 with a newer Cend controller. The machine appears to be in excellent condition. My questions are: Is there still parts support for this machine?
It covers setup and accessories like a lot of the old catalogs contained. 8520/8525 Clausing made two different vertical mills the 8520/8525 and the 8530/8535. The mill pictured above is the 8520/8525. There are major differences in the knee and the handle on the right of the feed table. I have a manual for both mills.

Good milling machines make things easy by offering a choice of either coarse or fine movement on hand controls. A lever allows coarse movement. Release it, and you engage a fine screw thread instead. There will also be depth gauges and depth stops. Precise scales are usually provided and can be marked to 0.001 of an inch.

That said, I would still take an Atlas in good condition over any of the Asian 7" & 9" lathes or Sherline & Taig machines. The milling machine used much less die cast than the lathe, gears and handwheels and maybe a few other places. It is a good rugged little machine and very useful in the small shop.

Milling Machines also go through phases of innovation. I'm no expert, but I recently bought a Bridgeport and one of the clones I also carefully considered was a Supermax. They have a decent reputation, and from what I heard they're one of the better - or even best - foreign built clones. From what I recall, the ones built starting in the early 90's were built a little better than the 80's models.
This series of machines are specially designed and developed for parts where burrs are formed along the edges after double surface milling and/or grinding; they can automatically remove the burrs on both surfaces of the part. In addition, the size of the radius can be quantitatively controlled. This automatic type of machine can be widely applied.
I'm scheduled to go see a Supermax YCI Vertical Milling machine 9x42. It's a 1993 model, so not too old. I've just seen a few pics of it and apparently it's in decent shape, but not like new or anything. From what I gather based on my online research, Supermax is one of the better Bridgeport clones, made in Taiwan instead of mainland China.
