The smock mill is a later development of the tower mill, where the masonry tower is replaced by a wooden framework, called the "smock", which is thatched, boarded or covered by other materials, such as slate, sheet metal, or tar paper. The smock is commonly of octagonal plan, though there are examples with different numbers of sides.
And then there was a new design – a fixed tower with a revolving roof. In this type of mill main shaft coming out of the roof, so that wherever the wind blew it with the wings- sails can be deployed against the wind with a lever or "gates", mounted on the other side of the roof and reaching up almost to the ground.
The prop isn't that large so I made a windmill tower that is just over 6 1/2 feet tall and all from material that can be found at the big box store. Since it is an outdoor decoration I made mine from cedar since it's a naturally rot resistant wood but a slightly cheaper alternative would be to make it from treated or untreated pine.
