The Napier mill was a success and employed many men from the village. In 1850 the grist mill was sold to Messrs. Cook and Keefer (of Strathroy). They later sold it to J.G. Sutherland who added a woollen mill and a carding mill. The mills had troubled times in the late 1880s. A fire was discovered in the woollen mill in March 1889.
