HOT STRIP MILL — HIGHEST PERFORMANCE FOR NEW AND EXISTING STEEL MILLS The demand for hot rolled strip is growing in multiple ways. To remain competitive, new and existing mills must meet this challenge in the best possible way. The production of hot strip is a key element of steel production.
The Tandem mill consists of three to six mill stands arranged in series to progressively reduce the thickness of the strip in a single pass. A continuous tandem mill has a welder and accumulator looper at the entry end to join successive coils of pickled hot rolled material.
Hot rolling strip mills were followed by cold rolling strip mills. Cold rolling strip mills were first established around 1929 and were able to produce steel at a lower gauge. Along with the technology of cold rolling milling and lower gauge steel, tinning was then made possible. Strip mills are the most common ones in operation today.

The hot-strip mill squeezes slabs, which can range in thickness from two to ten inches, depending on the type of continuous caster, between horizontal rolls with a progressively smaller space between them (while vertical rolls govern the width) to produce a coil of flat-rolled steel about a quarter-inch in thickness and a quarter mile in length.
