The highway in that hollow in the town of Springwater, was first located near the creek, and passed by where the gristmill stood, and was laid out Dec. 19th, 1790, by John Hooker, surveyor. In June 1808, it was changed to where it now is, and Ephraim Cleveland was the surveyor.
French's Gazetteer of New York State, 1860. SPARTA---was formed in Jan. 1789. A part of Springwater was taken off in 1816, West Sparta in 1846, and parts of North Dansville in 1846 and '49. A part of Dansville(Steuben co.) was annexed in 1822, and a part of Groveland in 1856.

Springwater was formed from parts of Sparta and Naples because these two communities lacked the funds to expand their own communities and maintain the valley. After drought conditions had severely affected Western New York in previous years, Knowles found that this area had its own favorable micro-climate and the area was ideal for farming.
