New Delhi: Domestic gold prices are expected to surge towards the highs of Rs 52,000-53,000 over the next 12 months. In 2021, prices of the precious metal have been trading between Rs 47,000 and 49,000 mark per 10 grams. However, gold prices had seen a surge during 2019 52 per cent and 25 per cent in 2020.
These numbers report that the cost of extracting an ounce of gold is actually over $1,000 per ounce, well above the aforementioned numbers. And since gold is currently trading at just over $1,200 per ounce, it explains why mining companies have had less-than-stellar profits. Determining the costs of mining largely depend on the region as well.
Producer hedging. The volume of gold that is supplied to the market each year can also be marginally affected by forward selling of future production – known as producer hedging.. There are times when miners will want to lock in a specific price for their future gold production – for example, to manage project costs or debt servicing.
OK, so what are the gold production costs and how can we use them in investing? The all-in sustaining costs were about $950 in 2017. It means that the price of gold was higher than the costs, making gold mining profitable. And the obvious investment implication is to invest in gold mining companies that do well in keeping all-in sustaining ...

2 George Milling-Stanley framed his case for a bull market in 2022. When talking about the ETF GLD Miling-Stanley said "We've lost about $10 billion to redemptions from GLD in 2021 so far, but that comes after a year in 2020 when we were up $15 billion. So we're still running pretty well if you take the two years as an average."
This resulted in average all-in sustaining costs averaging $1,760 per ounce gold. In 2013, the price for the yellow metal averaged $1,411 per ounce, making production at the mine far from economical.
Milling-Stanley added that once this wave of panic selling ends, gold will still be in a good position to push back up above $1,900 an ounce and take a run at the record highs above $2,000 an ounce by the end of the year. The comments come as gold prices lost significant ground since Wednesday's Federal Reserve monetary policy meeting.
