So remove the back cover to the gearbox. Then there should be a motor in a cage, and at the very bottom there will be a screw that looks directly up into the motor. Get the correct drive for the screw it might be allen or a flat screwdriver ect. And just give it half a turn and see if it make it sound better or worse.

You should be able to tighten that set screw to take care of the issue, but be sure to not over tighten it otherwise you'll be shoving two gears together.

No matter what motor height, there's a metal-on-metal grinding noise. New motor, just got done troubleshooting and fixing just about every other part of the gun. I've spent dozens of hours on this gun and I'm so tired of these new problems popping up. The pinion isn't stripped and neither is the bevel gear.
