The belt grinder. DIY 2' x 72' Belt Grinder Project Like almost every newbie knifemaker owning a decent belt grinder is dream. When I realized the price of a machine, my jaw hit the floor. Most of us getting started cannot afford a $2000 grinder. So I set out to design my own and I shamelessly borrowed as many ideas as I could.
Although this 2" x 72" belt grinder plan is not for a beginner, it was designed with the home shop machinist in mind. Anyone with modest equipment can complete this high performance machine. A belt grinder is a tool that I wanted to have for a long time. For no particular reason. I'm not a knifemaker and I don't do a ton of metal work so I could never justify the costs of buying one to myself. But what if it's a project for a video? With that in mind, I started my design of the belt grinder.
The grinder is designed to use either the flat platen attachment, or a large (10 inch) contact wheel, but will also accommodate other attachments. It uses the industry standard 2″ x 72″ belt and requires just a single tool, a 15/16 wrench, to change the belt and make adjustments. A serious machine for serious work.

You might try searching for "no weld grinder plans" It's been a long time since I was thinking of going that route, but I seem to remember there was an entire sub-culture of people sharing plans for bolt-together home built grinders. You could always adapt those plans to welding one up if you would rather go that route.
