Dr. Fret to the rescue! It's Level and Crown time! Here is the completed Fret Level and Crown on a Gibson J-200 StarBurst. The owner of this guitar was worried that this was a $300-400 Re-Fret! The fingerboard wear is of no consequence other than cosmetic-when it's time for a Re-Fret, we plane the fingerboard, maintaining the factory radius ...
Take the strings off of your acoustic guitar and rest it on a flat surface. Grab the center of your guitar's saddle with a pair of pliers and pull straight up off of the guitar body. With a bit of force, the saddle should slip right out. Measure 1/32 of an inch from the bottom of the saddle and draw a straight line across the saddle at this point.
The frets and the board itself are the parts which take most of the beating. Obviously, the frets are under constant friction from the strings. All that grinding can leave the frets in pretty rough shape after a while, especially with a lot of bending and vibrato.
The guitar string is being fretted at the first fret (by an invisible finger). Uh oh. Fret #2 is taller than Fret #1, which results in there not being enough space between the top of Fret #2 and the bottom of the guitar string. That means the guitar string will rattle/buzz against Fret #2 every time the guitar is fretted and played at Fret #1.
How to string an electric guitar gibson. When the string is loose, you can already unwind it from the peg. When the string is loose, you can already unwind it from the peg. Wow! $1,650 for Gibson to replace a fretboard. Prohibitively expensive. Yeah, there is a lot of work that needs to be done to remove a fretboard from a neck let alone replacement with a new one. Unless that guitar is something you can't live without and you want it to play great, I would think of some alternatives.
Dec-12-2011, 4:04am. My '88 Gibson F5L has severely pitted frets, the first 10 frets anyway, and I'm faced with re-fretting it soon. While a know a couple of excellent guitar luthiers, I have heard opinions that I should find someone experienced with mando vs guitar re-fretting, that they are very different animals.

When I experience that "grinding" feel, it's usually due to my frets accumulating some oxidation. Try taping off your fingerboard and polishing your frets with some steel wool. That grinding feeling should go away. Lolaviola Silver Supporting Member Messages 8,532 Jul 10, 2011 #9 If you have a rosewood board, you won't need to tape it. CyberFerret
If your 1930's Gibson L-OO, for example, measures 12-3/8" at the 12th fret, then your guitar's scale length is twice that—a 24-3/4" scale. For good intonation, the guitar's saddle will be placed so a little extra string length is added.
Then I measured the nut and 19th fret on each guitar and laid them out on paper (they were pretty close) to make sure my string spacing was ok. Since I had three, I made a drilling template. Of course I used plexiglass, which seems to be my favorite. For precision, I like to scribe things, and plexi scribes really well.
In order to measure the height of your guitar's strings, you should have either a ruler, a feeler gauge, or a specialized string action gauge. For electric guitars, in our opinion, a good default string height at the 12th fret is typically about 6/64th of an inch (2.38mm) on the bass side and 4/64th of an inch (1.59mm) on the treble side.
Strings and Humidity. Discussion in ' Strings [BG] ' started by TheSpinDoctor, Dec 6, 2021 . Yesterday, the band played an outdoor gig, starting at 7:30 AM. There was considerable humidity. The D'Addario ENRI71-5 strings on my Gibson Thunderbird (Strung as BEAD) were incredibly sticky/slow action.

Some thick poly on the board makes low small frets even lower though as the pooled thick finish might make a .040 fret effectively only .030 above the poly. The old Gibson fretless wonder necks often showed no fret wear for decades, possibly because the board stopped us from pressing the strings down far enough to really grind down the fret wire.

The Plek records the fret height in relation to the fretboard surface beneath each string at each fret to the accuracy of .0002". Once the Plek has recorded all the measurements, it will then put its grinding wheel in place and grind the frets to proper heights, taking into account the gauge of the strings used, eliminating buzzing and improving overall playability.
I prefer N/S fret and nickel strings for a compromise of longevity and string tone. Stainless frets will kill nickel strings in a few days because of the absolute hardness mismatch. I used to change strings every four days when playing a lot on my SS equipped guitar, a super Stratocaster type.
The frets were so loose I didn't even need the fret pullers for mast of the fret removal. With the board prepped as we saw above. Half the frets go in- this one gave me a bit of trouble - the wood was very old and on the weak side. All the frets are in and I'm ready to bevel the ends.
The condition of your frets will determine how well your guitar plays. Every time you press your strings against the frets, the friction between them subtly changes the shape of the frets, causing them to wear out. Over time, this metal-against-metal contact can lead to string rattle and intonation issues. The greatest fret damage is caused by ...
Place the rocker on the first three frets and rock it. If it makes a knocking sound, the first, and/or the third fret is lower than the second. Place the rocker a fret higher, covering the frets 2-3-4. Rock it. Do it all along the entire fretboard, for all the strings. Make notes. Write down the number of the low frets:

Safe-release painter's tape is used to locate the bridge and secure it's parts. The fret wear is extensive. The divots are too deep to allow for grinding and re-crowning.

Respectfully, your guitar is clearly angled/tilted in your photo in order to create the illusion of a bad string alignment. In the OP, the Gibson guitar is pretty much straight on, no d angle, leaving its truly terrible string alignment to be pretty obvious, and indefensible in …
Note: Gibson® guitar scale is commonly referred to as 24-3/4" but is actually 24.562". This is the most common of three different scales described as 24-3/4" by Gibson over the years. Many Gibson's have alternate scale lengths—please measure your guitar before ordering! Tip: For 20-fret necks, simply cut off the four highest slots.
