Noritake has developed a fixed diamond lapping wheel by new technology to improve them.
Ultimately when the whole workpiece has been lapped it will mirror the shape of the lapping plate. For this reason, flat lapping machines are able to generate incredibly flat workpieces. Although it seems as if the abrasive grains are working in a free movement, this is not entirely true.
Two of the large fabricating machines are shown in Figs 1 and 2. The SAGA (Fig 1) can be used for conventional loose abrasive grinding or polishing of optics up to four metres. The Strausbaugh (Fig 2) can grind or polish substrates up to 2.5 metres. Both of these units use a Draper motion to move the lap and are suitable for use with large laps.
Loose abrasive for lapping, polishing, etc. is mainly used in mirror grinding for brittle materials such as semiconductor materials and ceramics. The loose abrasive is suitable for obtaining a flat and smooth surface; however, it is not suitable for the grinding which requires large throughput and high shaping accuracy.
